A Step-by-Step Kashta and Desert Trip Setup Checklist

A kashta is lovely because it is simple. But a small gap hurts the whole group, because the shops are far away.

Use this list before you leave.

Before you go

• Pick the spot and check it is allowed, safe and reachable by car.
• Know the group size and plan seating, food and water around it.
• Check the weather before the date. Wind and cold change what you carry.
• Tell someone where you are going and when you will be back.

Seating

Choose one clear style:

• Rugs and floor seating: the best fit for a kashta, and it seats everyone.
• Backrests and cushions: enough for a long sit.
• Small tables: for coffee and tea beside each group.
• Chairs: for older guests and anyone who is not comfortable on the floor.

If you want a ready setup without carrying it yourself, it can be delivered, set up and collected.

Tent and shade

• A tent or hair tent shelters from the wind and gives privacy.
• A canopy for the day, if you are there in the morning or at noon.
• Peg it down firmly. The wind in the desert tests everything.

Lighting and fire

• Warm light for the seating and paths, plus a backup lantern or lamp.
• Keep the fire pit away from the tent and rugs, on ground clear of dry grass.
• Never leave the fire unwatched, and put it fully out when you leave.

Warmth and comfort

• Nights in the desert are colder than in the city. Bring heaters or blankets.
• Don't run a gas heater inside a closed tent.
• Have a power source ready for lights and sound if needed, or a generator if there is no power.

Coffee and hospitality

Keep the coffee spot fixed near the seating, with water, dates and cups. Everyone comes back to it more than you expect.

Before you leave

• Collect all rubbish and leave the place as you found it.
• Make sure the fire is out, with water or sand.
• Check the rented pieces before pickup.
