How to Arrange an Outdoor Majlis for a Gathering

A good outdoor majlis starts with the space, not the furniture.
When the space is planned, the seating falls into place and guests relax from the first minute.
1Choose the spot before the pieces
Stand in the space, at the time of day your event will happen if you can.
- Where do the sun and the shade fall at that hour?
- Where do guests enter, and where will they stand when they arrive?
- Is the ground level? Grass, tiles and sand each suit different flooring.
- Where is the nearest power point for lights and fans?
Take a photo from two angles. It saves a long explanation when you place your order.
2Pick the seating style
Each style has its use:
- Floor seating on rugs: good for family gatherings, and it seats more people in less space.
- Sofas with side tables: easier for older guests, and better for long hospitality.
- Chairs around tables: best when food will be served in the same space.
You can mix them. Many majlis put sofas for senior guests and floor seating for the rest.
3Lay it out as a U or a ring
Guests talk to each other, so don't line the seating up in one long row.
- Form a U or a ring so everyone can see everyone else.
- Leave a clear path for whoever serves coffee and hospitality.
- Keep the entrance free of seating.
- Put a small table within arm's reach of each seating group.
4Think about lighting early
An outdoor majlis in Riyadh usually runs into the evening.
- Warm, soft light is better for long sitting than strong white light.
- Light the paths and the seating entrance so nobody trips.
- If there are trees or a good wall, let the light touch them.
5Plan for the weather with the majlis, not after it
Weather changes how a space feels. In winter you need warmth. In summer you need shade and moving air.
Read our guide to heating and cooling outdoor events before you fix the layout.
6Match the space to the guest count
Don't rent more pieces than the space can hold, or a bigger space than the count needs. A large majlis with few guests looks empty. A crowded one tires everyone.
For estimates, see how many chairs and tables you need.
7Leave the setup to us
A good setup goes up quickly and is then left to the guests. If you would rather not carry anything, we handle delivery, setup and pickup. See what we rent and the areas we cover.
Send us the occasion, the guest count and a photo of the space on WhatsApp, and we will suggest a layout.
